Samy confident of strong outing

SUNGAI SIPUT: The Indian community will not fall prey to propaganda and they will continue to vote for the MIC and Barisan Nasional, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.

"I think this propaganda by a group of irresponsible people is fading and chances for all MIC candidates to win are very bright," he told The Star on his final day of campaigning here yesterday.

He said he was confident of a strong MIC show, going by the sentiments in the "hot seats" of Prai and Lunas which were going Barisan's way.

The party is contesting in nine parliamentary and 19 state seats.

"There have been pledges of support for Lunas candidate S. Ananthan while Prai candidate L. Krishnan is getting closer to the people and has earned their respect and recognition," he said.

Samy Vellu said the Indians knew that a small opposition could not provide any tangible support for the community.

"There must be machinery, government support, finance, opportunities for training and other matters," he said.

"The MIC stands as the first priority for obtaining assistance from the Government," he added.

Samy Vellu, who is contesting the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat for the ninth time, said the people's support for the Opposition was waning.

"They (the Indian electorate) are getting away from their short distraction in which many things were left unexplained.

"It is easier to say things and blame the Government but they must realise that implementation will take time," he said.

Samy Vellu said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak understood the predicament of the Indians and have agreed to help the community in an organised and systematic manner.

He urged the Indians to think of their future, their children's future and their grandchildren's future as only Barisan could provide a stable and prosperous Malaysia.
