Motion on temple rejected

The Star, Fri 2 Nov 2007

A DAP emergency motion to discuss the controversial temple demolition in Kampung Jawa, Shah Alam, was rejected.

M. Kulasegaran (DAP - Ipoh Barat), who tabled the motion, described the demolition as "shocking and sad."

"Insulting a place of worship is also a human rights violation."

On Tuesday, a group of residents in Kampung Rimba Jaya in Padang Jawa formed a human barricade to prevent the demolition of the 100-year Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and nearby squatter homes.

About 300 police and Federal Reserve Unit personnel were deployed to contain the situation. Rejecting the motion, Deputy Speaker Datuk Lim Si Cheng said the matter was not urgent as it was already in court.
