Samy: Talk first before demolishing temples

KUALA LUMPUR: The relationship between the people and the Government could be affected if more temples are demolished without prior consultation with the relevant parties, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

"There should have been earlier discussions between Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and myself before action was taken to demolish a temple," he said.

Samy Vellu was referring to Tuesday's incident where the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Padang Jawa, Shah Alam, was demolished.

The 35-year-old temple was torn down in an operation involving 200 enforcement officers from the Shah Alam city council, Subang Jaya municipal council and Klang municipal council.

The demolition angered the Shah Alam Indian community and a few residents were hurt during the demolition.

The Works Minister said he brought up the matter at Thursday's meeting with Mentri Besars and Chief Ministers chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Samy Vellu, a permanent member of the meeting, said there was a need for detailed study before any action is taken relating to religious matters.

"For example, we have to ensure an alternative site has been provided before demolishing the temple," he said.
