Bishop lauds cross assurance
PETALING JAYA: The Christian Federation of Malaysia has lauded the Education Ministry for its assurance that crosses and religious images in missionary schools in the country will stay.
Its chairman Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing said the government and the people must continue to support and encourage missionary schools to ensure that these schools contribute towards nation-building by providing quality and caring education.
Bishop Tan issued a statement yesterday commenting on remarks made by Parit Sulong MP Syed Hood Syed Edros on his proposal to have crosses and images in missionary schools removed.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar had replied that crosses in missionary schools in the country would stay, as this was the tradition from a long time ago.
Bishop Tan also applauded missionary schools for their continuing contribution to the betterment of students and teachers.
"Our missionary schools have been providing quality education to all students, regardless of race, religion and culture.
"The traditions and practices of the missionary schools reflect the first principle of our national ideology, the Rukunegara, of 'belief in God','' he added.
