ALOR STAR: A Pokok Sena housewife has filed a RM1.03mil suit against the police for allegedly causing the death of her son while in police custody.

Che Tom Isa, 57, accompanied by her husband Sulaiman Ismail, also 57, filed the suit at the Alor Star High Court Registrar Office yesterday.

Che Tom, who was represented by counsel V. Rajadevan, is seeking RM3,300 in special damages, RM500,000 in additional damages and another RM500,000 in exemplary damages.

Che Tom named the Kota Setar OCPD and the Inspector-General of Police as the first and second defendants respectively.

She claimed that her son Mohd Rizal Sulaiman, 19, died at the Kota Setar police lock-up after police allegedly beat him up.

She claimed that the beatings occurred at Kampung Pauh in Bukit Tok Said and at the Kota Setar police headquarters.

Che Tom said police arrested Mohd Rizal during a drug raid at Kampung Pauh on March 31.

She claimed that the police beat up Mohd Rizal and his friends during the arrest.

She said that despite her son’s injuries, he was then taken to the Kota Setar police headquarters lock-up the same day.

Mohd Rizal, the youngest of four siblings, died in the lock-up on April 4.

Che Tom said that Mohd Rizal was a rubber tapper earning RM50 per day, adding that he would always give half of his wages to her.
