IPOH: Police detained 82 people, including women and students, and seized 77 motorcycles in a pre-dawn operation to catch illegal racers and Mat Rempit.

Those arrested, aged between 15 and 38, were made to push their motorcycles for three kilometres from Jalan Tun Dr Ismail, where they were stopped, to the Ipoh traffic police enforcement unit in Jalan Chamberlain.

Among them were nine secondary school students, 10 college students, and four women, including one who was with her husband.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Azisman Alias said the couple had left their baby at home with the grandparents.

The four-hour operation ended at 6.45am yesterday.

One of those detained tested positive for syabu while another was found to have eight summonses issued against him.

The number of arrests would have been higher if some had not escaped on foot after abandoning their machines.

Of the 106 summonses issued against the group, 57 were for reckless riding, 43 for not stopping when ordered to by uniformed personnel and another 43 for jumping the red light.

Summonses were also issued for offences related to motorcycle licences, road tax, insurance, registration number plates and unapproved modifications.
