Demolition should have been put off, says Nazri

The Star, Wed 5 Dec 2007

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the recent demolition of an Indian temple in Padang Jawa by the Shah Alam Municipal Council could have taken place after Deepavali, reported Tamil Nesan.

He said the demolition of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Taman Karuppiah on Oct 30 had created dissatisfaction among Indian residents in that area and the Indian community throughout the country.

Nazri said the action had resulted in unnecessary tension between political parties and religious and non-governmental organisations in the country.

He urged government officers not to act impulsively but should realise that Malaysia was a multi-racial country and it was important that unity, understanding and cooperation were maintained.

Temple committees to obtain approval before building new temples

Kuala Langat MIC chief S. Batumalai said temple committees had to register and obtain approval before building a new temple, according to Malaysia Nanban.

They must also ensure the land had been properly registered so that they would not face any problems in future.

Batumalai said the authorities could not demolish any temple if it had the necessary approvals.
